Proper use of the Breg Cube system requires an insulation barrier between the pad and the patient’s skin. Some patients like to use a thin towel, t-shirt or other thin material. Breg makes a product called a "sterile dressing" which is designed to fit the anatomic pads.

Used this machine (rented) last year for my knee surgery, this time I decided to buy it for my upcoming shoulder replacement surgery. Now that I'm after the surgery, I realized I didn't even need it. Simple ice packs can be used and are much easier, since 20 minutes is the limit. But what really turned me off, and I hadn't realized it when I bought it, is that there is no way to turn this machine on and off without getting up to plug it in or out. So, I'm stuck in a recliner chair with my arm elevated and I have to get myself out of the chair, walk over to the plug, lean down, which isn't easy at all, and pull it out. I cannot understand why an on off button wasn't designed into it.
Hi Ann, we're sorry to hear that you are not loving your Polar Care Cube. Unfortunately, it does not have an on/off button (we'll relay this feedback to Breg) but we have some recommendations. You can purchase a timer (the type used for outdoor Christmas lights) on Amazon that is programmable and will turn on/off every 30 minutes or whichever time interval you prefer. You can also use an extension cord so that the plug is right beside you and elimates having to get up and plug it in/out of the wall. I had rotator cuff surgery in April 25. This ice system is the best. I've had two knee replacements where I used regular ice packs, top brand ice packs. What's great about this is: yes, it's portable... yes, it's heavy... but if I have to get up in the middle of the night to go use the bathroom I I just unplug the power to it unplug the attachment to my shoulder pad and I have a hand towel laying near it lay it on there and go to the bathroom come back, reattach it back to my shoulder packs, and then plug it back in and go back to sleep. Also, I didn't put ice in it. I froze 8oz bottles of water ( that way they didn't interfere with the lid) and would just exchange the 3 bottles when needed. I also used a hair clamp to hold the power cord near the adapter so that I didn't have to look for it when I came back. See pics!! Thank you, thank you!!!!
Pros--unit not too heavy when filled, simple to operate, motor is pretty quiet, minimal dripping of water when disconnecting self/pad from the pump line. Seems to last 6hrs before really needing to be re-set.
Order arrived in under a week without expedited shipping
Cons--lid/handle/locking system seems a bit flimsy so far, and you do need a lot of free ice cubes to fill it! We are using some frozen water bottles/bags but with the pump coming down from the lid into the bucket you do need to have some free-moving ice/pieces to fit around it.
Customer service is excellent and the product itself gives immediate relief and comfort to my knee.
