Who the DonJoy IceMan Clear3 is for

The IceMan Clear3 from DonJoy (Enovis) is a cold-only therapy unit for patients managing pain and swelling after knee, shoulder, hip, ankle or back surgery, used as directed by a medical professional. Choose it if you want a cooler you can see through: the clear tub shows exactly when the ice is gone, so you don't have to open the lid to check. Your choice of DonJoy wrap-on pad decides which body part it treats.

• One DonJoy wrap-on pad, chosen above: Universal XL, Universal XL with extended hose, McGuire Knee with open patella, Small Shoulder or Large Shoulder. "None - Cooler Only" ships without a pad.

DonJoy pads are meant to be used with a moisture barrier, so consider IceMan sterile dressings. Extra wrap-on pads and a dual pad Y adapter are sold separately.

How recirculation keeps the pad consistently cold

The IceMan doesn't pinch the flow to control temperature. Water that warms up in the pad comes back to a mixing chamber, where it blends with fresh ice water before going back out at a constant flow rate. DonJoy says this keeps the temperature more even across the pad and avoids freezing-cold water at the inlet. Per DonJoy's FAQ, water reaches the pad in a target range of 38°F to 42°F. Setup is ice to the fill line, cold water to the fill line, snap the lid shut, click the pad hose on and plug in; the pump self-primes.

Buy or rent?

Clear3 or Classic3: which should I get?

Both use DonJoy's recirculation system and the same wrap-on pads. The Clear3's transparent cooler lets you see the ice level, while the Classic3 has a handle that locks the lid.

Can I use frozen water bottles instead of ice?

DonJoy advises against it. The plastic keeps the ice from chilling the water properly, and label paper or glue can break down and travel into the hose and pad. Frozen blocks made in cups or plastic containers and dumped in are fine.

The pad doesn't feel very cold. Is it working?

DonJoy says anything below 55°F is in the therapeutic range. If it seems warm, check that the cooler has enough ice.
