Who the DonJoy IceMan Classic3 is for

The IceMan Classic3 is DonJoy's long-running cold-only unit, built for recovery after knee, shoulder, hip, foot and ankle, wrist or lower-back procedures. It's prescribed to help manage post-operative pain and swelling as directed by a medical professional. Pick it if you want the same recirculating cold as the Clear3 in a cooler whose handle locks the lid down, which is handy when you carry it from room to room.

What's in the package

• IceMan Classic3 cooler (DonJoy part 11-0494) with pump and locking handle
• Power supply
• One DonJoy wrap-on pad from the menu above: Universal, Universal XL, Small Shoulder, Regular Shoulder or Knee. "None - Cooler Only" has no pad.

Use the pad over a moisture barrier, such as DonJoy IceMan sterile dressings. Classic wrap-on replacement pads and a Y adapter for two pads are sold separately.

How the Classic3 works

Rotate the handle forward to unlock the lid, add ice and then cold water to their fill lines, set the lid on and swing the handle up and back to latch it. Snap the pad hose on until it clicks and plug the cord into the back of the unit. DonJoy's dual-pump recirculation sends water warmed in the pad back to be remixed with ice water at a steady flow rate, rather than restricting flow. DonJoy says this keeps cold consistent through the whole pad and avoids freezing inlet temperatures, delivering water within a target 38°F to 42°F.

Choosing a pad

• Universal (11-0679): 10.85″ x 11.34″, the general-purpose pad
• Universal XL (11-0681): 12″ x 11.34″
• Knee (McGuire, 11-1268): 10.85″ x 11.34″
• Regular shoulder (11-1334): 14″ x 23″ x 12.5″
• Small shoulder (11-1397): 12.75″ x 19″ x 12.25″

The regular shoulder pad runs large. If your chest is under 42″, we suggest the small shoulder pad. Other DonJoy pads fit the Classic3 too: the large rectangle pad (9.76″ x 13.75″) is useful after lower-back surgery, and the forefoot pad suits bunion surgery. Purchase or rental?

Classic3 FAQ

How is the Classic3 different from the Clear3?

Same recirculation technology and the same pad line. The Classic3 latches its lid with a rotating handle, while the Clear3 uses a see-through cooler so you can spot the ice level.

What can I use besides ice cubes?

DonJoy suggests freezing water in cups or plastic containers to make larger blocks you dump into the unit. Don't use frozen water bottles.

Which shoulder pad should I order?

Under a 42″ chest, the small shoulder pad; at 42″ or above, the regular.

How do I clean it?

Warranty, prescription and returns

The unit carries a 6-month manufacturer's warranty from purchase, and wrap-on pads carry 1 month (DonJoy warranty helpline 800-336-6569). DonJoy warns the device can be cold enough to cause serious injury and should be used only with a physician's prescription and direction.
