Built for knee surgery recovery

The Breg Polar Care Wave knee system is aimed at people coming home from a total or partial knee replacement, ACL or meniscus surgery, or a knee fracture repair whose surgeon has prescribed cold together with compression. Breg's stated intended use is treating post-surgical and acute injuries to reduce edema, swelling and pain where cold and compression are indicated. One shared cooler can also run two knee pads at once, which matters if you're having both knees replaced.

What you get

  • The Wave cooler (container and pump lid)
  • Tubing and a wall power supply
  • Your choice of pad: Knee Compression (standard), Knee Compression - Large, or the Universal Compression pad. "None - Cooler Only" ships without a pad.

Not included: reusable Wave ice bags and, for bilateral surgery, a Wave Y-connector plus a second knee pad.

Choosing the right knee pad

  • Standard knee (C00017): 16″ x 12″ pad for thighs measuring 8″ to 27″ around
  • Large knee (C00003): 16″ x 17.5″ pad for thighs measuring 16″ to 30.5″ around, with longer straps
  • Universal (C00016): a 13″ x 12.5″ pad you can strap to the knee now and to a shoulder or calf later

Thigh circumference is the number that decides it. More detail is on our Wave pad size chart.

Running it at home

Fill the container with water to its line, add cubed ice to the ice line, lock the lid, connect the hose to the pad until it clicks, and plug in. The pad chills and then gently inflates and deflates in one-to-two-minute cycles. Breg offers Regular (about 50 mmHg) and Low (about 25 mmHg) compression and two cold levels, Colder (pad averaging at least 45°F) and Cold (at least 50°F). Each therapy can also be turned off on its own. Replenish ice every 6 to 8 hours or as needed, or rotate four frozen Breg ice bags every 4 to 5 hours.

Honest notes before you order

There's no countdown timer. The unit shuts itself off only if both therapies have been off for 15 minutes, and owners report smart plugs won't bring it back on after a power cut, so unless your prescription covers overnight use, plan sessions for when you'll be awake to stop them. Reviewers also say the reusable ice bags can tear over time. Fill them only to the line (about two cups), dry them before freezing, and keep a spare set.

Rent it or own it?

Knee rentals are usually billed weekly. Because the Wave is a single-patient device that stays with you, it's worth adding up a rental quote for your full recovery and comparing it with buying, especially if a second knee is on the calendar. Our knee surgery rental guide has the details. HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout; keep your receipt and prescription.

Knee recovery questions

Can I sleep with the Wave on my knee?

Only if your prescription covers overnight use. Breg's instructions call for skin checks typically every 1 to 2 hours, and the Wave has no timer to stop it while you sleep.

How long should I use an ice machine after knee surgery?

Your surgeon sets the schedule. Our article on how long to use an ice machine after knee surgery covers what typical protocols look like.

Can I treat both knees at once?

Yes. Add the Wave Y-connector and a second knee pad, and one cooler feeds both.

Is compression required?

No. Compression can be set to Off if your care team wants cold only.

Prescription and returns

U.S. federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a medical professional. Breg warrants the unit for 180 days against defects. As a single-patient medical device it can't be returned after shipping except for a warranty defect (see our refund policy).

Pain Relief & Reduced Swelling, Love it

16 days into recovery from total knee replacement. Love my Breg. I credit it with helping speed my recovery. I think the compression feature is the secret sauce. It feels so good! Only one minor issue which is the straps on my knee pad are losing adhesion. I will need to replace them soon. Still giving a 5 because this machine has done so much for me. Try it, you will be glad you did.

Breg Polar Care Wave

I am not happy with my purchase. I paid almost $370 for my machine And I think that there are many flaws to this system. The out let and the hose are mashed or crunched by the handle. I have tried turning the handle the other direction or putting the cord under the handle but if you do it that way you have to unplug it all before picking it up. I was very shocked there was no type of a timer on the system or a remote control. There are many other systems online for $200 less that had some type of a remote or a timer.
The lid holds at least a cup of water inside of it and so when you have to change the ice or ice bags, The water that is retained inside of the lid goes all over your floor unless you hold the lid upside down over the bucket for several minutes shaking it before you can lay it down and change your ice. I had a meniscus repair and I did not think I would have to do all of this work to get relief. Another big flaw is the heaviness and hardness of the clamp that the joins the two hoses. My meniscus repair was on my right leg And because I sleep on the left side of the bed that big heavy clap has to lay across my ankle or my ankle which is very uncomfortable. I have to use a sock or ace wrap to cover up that clamp. I feel like you could have provided something to go over it because it is heavy and in the way. I wish I could return this for a different model. I keep feeling like I could have ordered something much cheaper and be more satisfied. Sorry to submit such a bad review but I'm not happy and I think all of these things could have been different. The outlet could have been placed in a different spot, there could be a hook on the bucket to hang the lid so that the water would drip inside of the bucket and not all over my floor, You could have pro vided something to go over the clamp, that either has to sit on my injured or under my good leg.

Hi Asenath, Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We're sorry to hear that the product didn't meet your expectations, especially while you're recovering from surgery. We understand how important comfort and ease of use are during that time.
We'd like to clarify that we are the retailer of this product and are not the manufacturer, so the design features you mentioned—such as the hose placement, lid design, connector, and the lack of a timer or remote—are determined by the manufacturer. That said, we appreciate you taking the time to voice your concerns and we will be forwarding your feedback to the manufacturer so they are aware and can identify opportunities for future improvements. We're sorry the product wasn't the experience you were hoping for, and we appreciate you taking the time to provide constructive suggestions.

Stopped working after first day

I ordered the Polar Care wave for overnight delivery because I urgently needed it to speed recovery so I could travel for my birthday. I was pleased It arrived on time. I wanted to get used to the machine so I barely used it on the first day, just one 30 minute session and one 40 minute session- and then it stopped working. Now I have to wait for the warranty claims process to be sent a replacement. A week since delivery and I'm still using ice packs. I wonder if I would be in this situation if I went with a machine from a different brand, or a different supplier.

Hi Selom, Thank you for sharing your experience. We're very sorry that your original unit stopped working shortly after you received it. While the issue was unfortunately a product defect that was outside of our control as the retailer, we wanted to resolve it as quickly as possible. Rather than having you wait through the manufacturer's standard warranty process, we immediately shipped a replacement machine and pad via overnight delivery at no cost to you. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience the defective unit caused and hope the replacement has been working as expected. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to share reports like yours with the manufacturer to help improve product quality.
